Not sure what you are asking . . once the cancer is metastatic it hitches a ride in the blood stream and lymphatic system . . meaning it can go anywhere in the body and set up new cancer colonies everywhere.

With colon cancer complete surgical removal of all visible disease along with chemotherapy to try and control the mets would be one goal.

He has stage III, possibly IV, colon cancer. He has had a portion of his large intestine, along with the cancer removed. However 6 out of 10 lymph nodes in that portion contained cancer. Also the cat scan showed something in the liver but he is to get an MRI to determine if that is cancer or not. He will be receiving chemo. through a port, 2 days every week for 6 months. Are there any alternative or additional treatments available?

Hi there! I am not sure where you are located, but I know what you’re going through, both as a caregiver and a from a patients prospective. I am going to be 33 next week, I was diagnosed at 28 with stage 2 colon cancer. I have the gene that causes colon cancer-HNPCC(Hereditary Non-Polyposis Colorectal Colon Cancer), MLH-1 mutation. My mom passed it to me, she got it from her father, etc., My father also had colon cancer three months after me at age 73. He’s had 7 cancers in 13 years-currently has leukemia and I currently have stage 1 cervical cancer.

The previous poster was right in answering all the questions and listing the different types of chemo-I did Folfox-5FU, with Oxaliplatin, and Leukovorin-I ended up having an allergic reaction to that after I had that nice port put in and they did 6 months of oral Xeloda with me. However, at the time they were doing clinical trials with Avastin and I hear that’s AWESOME stuff.

Don’t fret or lose hope! I have know people that were written off and stage 4 and they’re here 10 years later! My advice to you and your husband is to be proactive! Listen and ask questions to your doctors, they are there to serve you! If you don’t like their responses get another opinion, yes, time is of the essence, but this is life here, people get second opinions on their houses, cars, etc. take the time to do it on your body-I so wish we had did with my mother! Keep a chart-medical record-get copies of everything HIPPA allows you that freedom of your medical record-you’ll need this information because chemo is no joy ride and if he gets ill and needs to go to the er you have his "current" chart there with you-it will speed things up and help the ER docs, etc treat him faster if needed.

I don’t know what state you’re located in or else I could provide you with more resources and contacts. How old is he? Also a PET scan-google or yahoo it! It is used to "help" diagnose cancer-better than an MRI IMO, they use it as a "re-staging" for cancer patients, my father and I have one done every 3-6 months, basically it’s like a CT scan, but it’s of your whole body, and they inject a little dye and you drink some barium and it’s this SUV (Standard Uptake Value) that is measured-it highlights up on the films like a highlighter, the higher the numbers-the greater the chance there is metabolic abnormalities there, thus cancerous cells.

Chemo is going to be difficult, at least for me and my mother it was-my dad is very fortunate, he tolerates it well. Some things to keep in mind-use plastic utensils to eat things with-stuff will taste like metal if you don’t and don’t eat things from metal containers like canned fruit, etc., Once the chemo starts taking effect, like the second dose-he’ll get the cold hands sensation-so no cold liquids-room temperature will be just fine, same thing with being around the fridge and freezer items & same goes with the grocery store-when you pick up a cold item it’s like electricity is running through your veins. Avoid high acids foods-reflux and upset stomach will just set in-not a good combination. Zofran 4 & 8 mg was the best nausea med & now they have some that are in dissolvable kind for the tongue.

If his blood counts go down from chemo-which they probably will, he may have to take procrit or neulasta(sp) shots, the latter will cause some bone pain because it affects your bone marrow, it’s normal, but don’t hesitate to mention it to your doctor-don’t hesitate to mention anything to the doctor!

Also-neuropathy-numbness in hands and feet-I found that vitamins B6 & B12 are amazing when it comes to this-but check with the doc first. If diarrhea sets in bad, A&D ontiment is good to have on hand, as are baby wipes & marshmellows-if he can tolerate them, they slow down the digestive track a little cause you get tired of taking immodium or at least I did.

I would love to talk to you some more, or heck I’d even chat w you over the net, check out my profile, it’s got my IM info in there! Good luck!

Thanks heckkon….
Thank you Yagen

The below suggestions highlight why internet searches can be harmful to people. Unfortunately, the likelyhood is that with stage 4 (Dukes D) colonic cancer, there will be no curative treatment. It has spread to other organs, most commonly the liver, but also the lungs and potentially the bones. The latter two are less common, but are more common in rectal cancers.

Treatment options. Most of the time the primary bowel tumour will be removed, mainly to prevent the chance of obstruction of the bowel, which can obviously cause major problems. At the operation, the extent of the liver mets will also be assessed, sometimes using intra-operative USS, other times just manually feeling the liver. If there is a solitary lesion, or multiple lesions in one lobe of the liver, then there is a chance of curative treatment.

An MRI will usually be performed as it gives finer detail of the liver and ensures there are no other smaller mets not visible on CT or other modes of imaging. Post bowel surgery, normally give chemotherapy (several regimens available) and then re-scan to see if the liver disease has changed in the interval. If it is still deemed operable, then hepatectomy may be possible if there is enough residual liver left.

If as is most often the case, liver surgery is not possible, then post resection chemotherapy will be offered, with the hope of improving the survival.

If bowel surgery is not an option, then palliative chemotherapy will be offered, sometimes with radiotherapy depending on the site of the tumour, and the symptoms.

I have a nice guy in my life that found out he had a bad case of colon cancer at the young age of 37. He went in for surgery right after chirstmas and start chemo treatments. He had 6 weeks of chemo a 2nd surgery and 6 to 12 weeks of more chemo. We were planning a longterm relationship but I had not the heart to ask him if all the chemo would cause problems with making babies later on. Something we had talked about having more kids earilier before all this happened but then this seemed to happened so fast… I did not think to ask him questions like that. Is our own kids too much to hopeful?
Thanks for the replies…

Nano is partly correct. Most chemo drugs will affect sperm counts. Most men are given the option of sperm banking before chemo starts…as a "just in case" plan. Sometimes the effects of chemo will reverse and men will be able to have children down the road. However, depending on the chemo drugs, the strength, frequency and duration may cause long-term or irreversible damage. My husband was permanently sterilized due to long-term chemo treatments.

I wouldn’t wait to speak with him about this – and if he doesn’t know the answer…maybe both of you could speak with a doctor. Don’t let the answer determine your future with him — you’ll be able to deal with whatever side effects that may or may not happen.

CANCER: There’s a new Swedish study which shows that human breast milk kills cancer. On the news this guy who drank human breast milk (with a prescription) beat cancer. It was discovered by Swedish scientists that human breast milk (spilled into a petri dish) kills cancer. People who drink it have had some success in fighting off cancer.

You need a prescription and it’s about $3 an ounce at a breast milk bank, but it works.

They have an idea as to how long you have had it by how far advanced and spread it is. NO ONE can tell you exactly how long. Everyone is different and responds differently to treatment. It will also matter if it has spread to other organs or not yet.
If caught early, chance of survival is at least 5 or more yrs. I would check out some websites for more info. They are making advances in medicines every day. Things that used to kill a person in 6 months are prolonged for yrs. now and some are cured entirely.
Pray…it works too when all else fails.

I have recently started dating a guy who is undergoing treatment for colon cancer. We haven’t discussed sex other then the fact that due to the treatment he has told me he is not able to. I am wandering whether after the treatment will he be able to resume a normal sex life and how do I go about bringing up the subject or do I just wait till he brings it up?

As far as his cancer is concerned, please let him know, that you are there for him and that the sex, is not what’s important right now, his health is. I understand that you have your sexual needs and i’m sure if he was up to it, he would do everything in his power, to fulfill your needs. You have to understand, he’s going through a really tough time right now, with his treatments and i’m sure you know, it can take a toll, on his body. I would let him bring the subject of sex up, when he get’s to feeling better, I guarantee you, it will be well worth the weight. I want to let you know, I have so much respect for you and I don’t even know you. I say this because you are still with this guy, regardless of his condition, some women would have left him, the moment they found out, that he was sick. The good Lord, will bless you in so many ways, you just wait and see. I wish him the best, in his request for remission and trust me, the good Lord is going to heal him, just have faith. You are a good person, God Bless you.
